Year 5 Curriculum Overview
In Year 5, pupils move into the upper years of Key Stage 2 with growing maturity, independence, and curiosity. Our curriculum is designed to inspire deeper thinking, broaden knowledge, and strengthen the academic and personal skills that will support pupils as they prepare for the transition to Year 6.
In English, children engage with rich, challenging texts that encourage them to think critically, discuss ideas with confidence, and write with increasing sophistication. They explore a wide range of genres, developing secure grammar, editing skills, and a strong personal voice in their writing. Opportunities for debate, presentation, and drama further enhance pupils’ communication skills.
Mathematics in Year 5 builds on prior learning while extending pupils’ understanding of more complex concepts. Children secure efficient methods for calculation, deepen their knowledge of fractions, decimals, and percentages, and apply their reasoning skills to multi‑step problems. We encourage pupils to approach challenges with resilience and to articulate their thinking with clarity.
Our broad and engaging wider curriculum supports pupils in making meaningful connections across subjects. In science, children investigate forces, materials, space, and life cycles through practical enquiry and critical thinking. History and geography topics introduce pupils to ancient civilisations, global issues, and physical processes, encouraging them to consider the world from multiple perspectives.
Art, design technology, computing, and music provide opportunities for creativity, innovation, and the development of technical skills.
Physical education promotes teamwork, stamina, and a commitment to healthy lifestyles. Through PSHE, pupils develop emotional literacy, responsibility, and the confidence to form positive relationships, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of upper Key Stage 2.
Inclusion is central to our Year 5 provision. We ensure that all pupils—regardless of their background, abilities, or additional needs—feel valued, supported, and able to participate fully in every aspect of school life.
Adaptive teaching and targeted support enable every child to make strong progress and develop a genuine sense of achievement.
By the end of Year 5, pupils are reflective, motivated, and increasingly independent learners. They demonstrate maturity, strong work habits, and readiness for the academic and personal challenges of Year 6.
