Year 3 Curriculum Overview

Year 3 marks the beginning of Key Stage 2 and an exciting new chapter in each child’s learning journey. Our curriculum is designed to support pupils as they take this important step, offering challenge, inspiration, and a broad range of opportunities that build confidence and independence.

In English, children continue to develop as fluent readers and increasingly skilled writers. Through exposure to rich, engaging texts, they deepen their understanding of language, explore new genres, and refine their ability to write for different purposes. Speaking and listening remain central, enabling pupils to share ideas, build vocabulary, and communicate with clarity.

Mathematics in Year 3 encourages children to think logically, apply strategies, and develop solid number fluency. Pupils explore multiplication and division in greater depth, investigate fractions, and begin to work with larger numbers. Problem‑solving and reasoning remain at the heart of the curriculum, ensuring pupils can apply their skills with independence and confidence.

Our wider curriculum continues to offer breadth, creativity, and real‑world relevance. In science, children learn to plan investigations, draw conclusions, and build a deeper understanding of the natural and physical world.

History and geography topics broaden their awareness of ancient civilisations, global communities, and the environment. Lessons in art, design technology, music, and computing allow pupils to express themselves, develop practical skills, and engage with new technologies.

Physical education supports the development of teamwork, coordination, and healthy lifestyles, while PSHE helps children grow socially and emotionally. We encourage pupils to show respect, responsibility, and resilience as they adapt to new routines and increased expectations.

By the end of Year 3, our pupils are confident learners who have embraced the transition into Key Stage 2. They demonstrate greater independence, curiosity, and enthusiasm, and are well-prepared to continue their learning journey through school.
