Year 4 Curriculum Overview

In Year 4, we continue to nurture pupils’ growing independence, curiosity, and confidence as learners. As children progress through Key Stage 2, our curriculum offers challenge, inspiration, and a wide variety of opportunities that deepen understanding and broaden horizons across all subject areas.

English lessons help pupils to become more expressive, reflective, and skilled communicators. Through high‑quality texts, children explore new themes, analyse characters and settings, and further develop their ability to write with clarity, accuracy, and imagination. Speaking and listening activities encourage pupils to share ideas, build confidence, and engage respectfully in discussion.

In mathematics, pupils extend their understanding of place value, explore more complex multiplication and division, and develop secure strategies for working with fractions, decimals, and measures. Reasoning and problem‑solving remain central, enabling pupils to apply their skills with independence and resilience.

Our wider curriculum provides exciting, knowledge‑rich learning experiences. In science, pupils investigate topics such as sound, electricity, and living things through practical enquiries and thoughtful questioning.

History and geography topics deepen children’s understanding of ancient civilisations, world regions, and the physical processes that shape our planet. Lessons in art, design technology, music, and computing give pupils the chance to develop creativity, practical skills, and digital confidence.

Physical education promotes teamwork, health, and self‑discipline, while PSHE supports pupils’ emotional wellbeing, relationships, and sense of responsibility within the school community.

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We ensure that every child—whatever their background, needs, or starting point—is supported, valued, and challenged to succeed. Our adaptive teaching approach enables all pupils to participate fully, make excellent progress, and feel proud of their achievements.

By the end of Year 4, pupils have matured as independent, reflective learners. They approach new challenges with confidence, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of belonging, ready to continue their journey through the upper stages of Key Stage 2.
