Year 2 Curriculum Overview
In Year 2, we provide an enriching and nurturing learning experience that supports every child in developing confidence, independence, and a deep enjoyment of school life.
As the final year of Key Stage 1, this is a pivotal stage in our pupils’ educational journey, and we ensure that learning is engaging, purposeful, and carefully structured to build strong foundations for future success.
Lessons are carefully planned to ensure that all learners are able to achieve regardless of their background, ability, or individual needs.
Our English and mathematics curriculum is thoughtfully planned to secure key skills in reading, writing, fluency, and reasoning. Children enjoy daily opportunities to explore high‑quality texts, broaden their vocabulary, refine their handwriting, and apply their mathematical understanding to real‑life contexts. We strive to foster a genuine love of reading and an enthusiasm for problem‑solving.
The wider curriculum is broad, creative, and designed to spark curiosity. Through science, children learn to ask questions, predict outcomes, and explore the world around them through hands‑on investigation. In history and geography, pupils begin to develop an understanding of significant events, places, and people, as well as a sense of their own place in the world. Art, design technology, computing, music, and physical education provide rich opportunities for self‑expression, imagination, teamwork, and skill development.
Personal development is central to the Year 2 experience. We teach children to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and develop resilience and self-belief. Our nurturing approach helps each child to grow in confidence, understand their emotions, and develop positive relationships with others.
By the end of Year 2, our pupils leave Key Stage 1 as enthusiastic learners who are ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of Key Stage 2. They carry with them a strong sense of achievement, a growing independence, and a solid academic foundation on which to build.
