Year 6 Curriculum Overview
Year 6 represents the culmination of pupils’ primary education and is an important year for academic challenge, personal growth, and preparation for secondary school.
Our Year 6 curriculum is designed to inspire ambition, deepen subject knowledge, and develop the independence and resilience pupils need for the next stage in their learning journey.
In English, pupils study high‑quality, challenging texts that encourage sophisticated discussion, analysis, and critical thinking. They refine their writing across a wide range of genres, learning to write with accuracy, maturity, and a strong authorial voice. Opportunities for debate, performance, and extended writing enable pupils to express themselves confidently and articulately.
Mathematics in Year 6 consolidates prior learning while extending pupils’ mastery of complex concepts, including algebra, ratio, geometry, and advanced problem‑solving. Pupils develop secure fluency and the ability to reason logically and independently, preparing them thoroughly for the demands of Key Stage 3.
Our broad and engaging wider curriculum provides depth, challenge, and opportunity. In science, pupils investigate evolution, electricity, light, and other key areas through hands‑on enquiry and thoughtful questioning. History and geography topics allow them to explore global issues, historical change, and the interconnectedness of people and places.
Art, design technology, computing, and music encourage creativity, critical thinking, and the development of sophisticated technical skills.
Physical education promotes teamwork, leadership, and healthy lifestyles. Through PSHE, children develop emotional understanding, responsibility, and self‑esteem, equipping them for the personal and social challenges of adolescence.
Inclusion is fundamental to our Year 6 provision. We ensure that every pupil—regardless of their background, ability, or individual needs—is supported, challenged, and enabled to succeed. Through adaptive teaching, personalised support, and high expectations for all, we help every child to achieve their potential and feel a strong sense of belonging.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave our school as confident, reflective, and responsible young people. They are equipped with the academic skills, personal strengths, and positive attitudes needed to thrive in secondary school and beyond.
